Portfolio Professional Presentations

Throughout the semester, I chose to give four different speeches. I decided each topic on my own, and tried my best to tailor each topic to my audience.

The first speech I gave in this class was the Experience speech. I talked about a tough time I had with a past roommate. I tried to stay conversational, and I focused my energy on my presentation rather than my nerves.

The second speech I gave was the Informative speech. I knew my audience pretty well at this point. We were all friends on Facebook, so I figured out what would work, and what would not. I landed on the idea of a “how-to” speech, and gave it on a topic I thought would be relevant: how to be dope. I was very nervous going into this speech, but I remembered my outline and made it through.

The third speech I gave was a YouTube video. I spoke about how I struggled with faith, and how I eventually found a testimony. I decided to use this story as my YouTube speech because it is hard for me to calm my nerves when I speak in a more serious tone. I was very calm while recording the video, and I feel that the speech went well for the time given.

My final speech was my TedTalk about goals. This was the speech that I rehearsed the most for. I wanted to have it down so that I would be able to conquer my nerves, and it worked for the most part.My microphone started to slip and fall towards the end of my speech, and it hurt my ending, but I still feel that it was my best speech yet.

My goal throughout the semester was to keep a very conversational tone so that my audience would feel more involved. I noticed that my nerves would only come when the audience was not laughing, so I tended to speak on less serious topics. I also held on to my notes for every speech. I feel that I have a lot more room to grow as a speaker, and that I will continue to work on my fears so that I can be a more credible and professional speaker.

Center Stage Fall 2016

Working on the Center Stage marketing board has been such a blast. I have met so many incredible people because of this practicum. I have also seen growth in myself because of the experiences I had with Center Stage.

One of the biggest things I learned is that we have to be quick to think of solutions to problems. While setting up for the Scotty McCreery show, our breakfast order came in an hour early. We were worried that the food would get cold by the time Scotty’s crew could get to it. We had to think on our toes, and we were able to think of a way to keep the food warm.

Something I will never forget about this semester is the bond that the board had. I have been in Center Stage for three semesters now, and I have never felt so close to my classmates. We all had a blast working together and sorting through any challenges that came our way.

I am planning on doing Center Stage again in the Spring. I hope that we can continue to bond with each other as more semesters pass. I also hope to continue my growth as an individual, and to help bring new ideas for the future of Center Stage.

Then he told me that he had always liked my playing

March 25, 2015

Worst day of my life

It was the day Zayn Malik / 1d

I was a mess that day

And I made an impulse decision
SLIDE

I bought a cardboard cutout of zayn

If you guys need proof it literally reminds me of the purchase right there
BLANK SLIDE

What naive past Kelsey didn’t know

A boy would ask her on a date

She would say no bc she was getting creepy vibes

This boy would look at her and say

“You know what, Kelsey? Good luck. Bc that zayn cutout can’t support you”
I decided to write that down bc it was funny and obviously not true

Then I kept tabs on every comment made to me about how being single was ruining my life

A year later, I had an idea

What if I did a photoshoot with zayn

And what if I uploaded an album of the pictures to Facebook

And also what if I captioned each photo with one of those super helpful comments that people have made to me
So I did it
SLIDE

“YOU SHOULD WEAR LESS MAKEUP. BOYS LIKE THE NATURAL LOOK”

I’ll definitely look into it
SLIDE

“STUDY THE MARRIED GIRLS. THATS WHO YOU NEED TO LOOK LIKE”

I have a degree to study for but thanks for the concern
I ended the album with my fav quote
SLIDE

“THAT ZAYN CUTOUT CANT SUPPORT YOU”
Was this a petty goal? Probably.

But I did it anyway, and zayn was right there for me
BLANK SLIDE

Since the album, Zayn has continued to help me achieve my goals

Right now, my dream is to be a big makeup artist on youtube

I had uploaded three tutorials to my channel before zayn stepped in to help me

Make goals constantly. Even if they are small or petty, never stop moving.
It’s okay to forget your goals. 4yr old Kelsey is not ashamed to not be a cab driver bc 20 yr old Kelsey gets v nervous when others are in the car
Changing your goals will not slow you down. I don’t know if I would’ve been a better person or a worse person as a cheerleader, but I’m happy w who I am bc of band.
Achieve your goals, and constantly make new ones.

The beauty of life isn’t the number of goals you reach, but the effort you put into achieving those dreams.
Thank you.

Highlighter Challenge

On May 24th, YouTuber Mariya posted a video of herself doing her full face of makeup using only highlighters. Since then, her video has gone viral in the beauty community, reaching over 1 million views. This is amazing considering she only has 70 thousand subscribers.

Once her video started getting attention, memes of her thumbnail were instantly created and shared all over social media. Everyone was loving the images, and they began calling her a “cute glazed donut.”

Beauty gurus all over YouTube decided to make her video into a new challenge. The Highlighter Challenge was done by NikkieTutorials, Jeffree Star, MannyMUA, and many more. Jeffree and Nikkie decided to upload their videos at the same time, so the hype for their versions was unreal.

nikki_5

YouTubers made a smart move by making this video into a challenge. Since it became a thing, more and more people are beginning to subscribe to the channels of those who participate. This is an excellent way for vloggers to gain exposure and try to catch the attention of beauty lovers.

Right now, a lot of hype is stirring for beauty guru Jaclyn Hill to show her version of the challenge. She has a collaboration with Becca cosmetics, and they have created the most highly coveted highlighter in the cosmetic world, Champagne Pop.

Her subscribers have been commenting, tweeting, and doing whatever they can to let her know how much they want her to do the challenge. On June 6th, Jaclyn tweeted to her fans, hopefully implying that she will try the challenge out soon.

Screen Shot 2016-06-09 at 8.33.06 AM.png

She also retweeted MannyMUA, who told her to go ahead and try the challenge.

I think that this challenge has benefited not only Mariya, but beauty YouTubers and cosmetic brands, as well. They are all taking advantage of the opportunity to gain attention while the hype is still there. The Highlighter Challenge will die out soon, but, for now, everyone is trying to gain as many fans as they can.

King Tut

Jeffree Star released his new highlighters, called Skin Frost, last Wednesday, May 25th. In the cosmetic world, highlighters are used to add a shine effect to the skin. They are usually applied on top of the cheekbone, down the bridge of the nose, above the cupid’s bow, and above the brow bone.

a79b107bb7fca8c599aa84f36fb9e02d

There was a ton of hype for his launch because this was the latest addition to his cosmetic line. His highlighters were gone within hours of the launch. A few customers were having problems with the highlighter “King Tut” in particular. It was arriving completely crumbled.

Only a few customers received shattered “King Tut” highlighters. Maybe it’s an ancient Egyptian curse? Whatever it was, people were quick to bring up Jeffree’s statement about Kylie’s lip wands earlier this year. He assured everyone that he is someone who cares about his products, and he would do what he could to fix the situation.

Jeffree also saw that some people wanted the public to think that every single one of his highlighters was broken. He addressed the rumor, and then retweeted pictures of “King Tut” that had arrived to the customers intact.

Screen Shot 2016-06-02 at 11.19.20 PM

He also retweeted a tweet that showed the packaging of the products so that the public would know that he did everything he could to make sure the products would not shatter.

Screen Shot 2016-06-02 at 11.24.48 PM

This made it easier for people to believe that it could not be Jeffree’s fault, but that the USPS workers were not handling the products carefully enough. He continued to tweet, and shifted the blame from his company to USPS, which gave the desired effect.

Screen Shot 2016-06-02 at 11.18.31 PM

In another attempt to avert the situation, Jeffree announced that he has been working on a new eyeshadow palette that would be launching this Fall.

I think that Jeffree knows what he is doing in the PR world. When I read the tweets without thinking about PR strategies, I was completely convinced that the failures could not have been Jeffree’s fault. After analyzing everything, it seems weird that there was only one shade that arrived shattered. He did address that it could have been a softer formula, but he never followed up on that statement. He did, however, announce that everyone who did receive a crumbled highlighter would either get a full refund or a new product shipped to them.

Jeffree concluded his tweets on the subject by letting the public know that the negativity wouldn’t get him down.
